President Özcan included the following statements in his message: “Referring to the strategic importance of the agricultural sector in terms of economic growth, food supply security, and sustainable development, it is of great importance to empower farmers, who are at the heart of production, and to protect the sustainability of production. Global climate crises, wars, logistical problems, and disruptions in the food supply chain have made the importance of agriculture even more visible. Today, food is one of the most strategic issues in the world. Countries that control food will be the countries that shape the future. Therefore, agriculture is no longer just an economic activity; it is a strategic power element that directly affects many areas, from national security to social stability. Turkey, with its production capacity, fertile lands, and strong agricultural potential, is among the leading agricultural countries in the world. Behind this success lies great effort, sacrifice, and hard work. Our farmers, who go to their fields with the first light of dawn and struggle for production throughout the four seasons of the year, are not only nurturing the soil but also life itself. In addition to its contribution to the economy, the agricultural sector plays a critical role in the sustainability of life for society.” Özcan stated that in recent years, the agricultural sector has faced significant problems such as production costs, climatic risks, and migration from rural areas to cities, adding that the disengagement of young people from agriculture poses a serious risk for the future. He reminded that the rate of young farmers in Turkey is declining and the average age of farmers is rising to 59.
Pointing out that this situation needs to be carefully evaluated in terms of sustainable production, Özcan stated, "To protect the future of agriculture, we must re-involve our youth in production. Practices that strengthen rural life, support young farmers, encourage female producers, and increase the use of technology in agriculture, along with steps to strengthen production infrastructure, are of great importance for our country's agriculture. Smart farming practices, digitalization, water efficiency, and sustainable production models will determine the future of the sector. Our youth need to see agriculture not just as a traditional occupation, but as a strategic field shaped by technology, entrepreneurship, and production power. A strong agricultural sector is also of great importance for economic independence. Maintaining the income stability of farmers is essential for the continuity of production." President Özcan concluded, "On this occasion, I congratulate all our farmers who, through their hard work, transform the land into fertility and their labor into produce, on May 14th, World Farmers' Day; and I wish them a fruitful and profitable production season where they receive the rewards of their labor."
